SAIBA MAIS SOBRE NÓS

The history of the company began on November 19, 1926, when Messias Baptista registered as a sole trader.

At the beginning, it was dedicated to the trade of table wines and brandies in the country, becoming, in 1929, the largest supplier of wine brandies to the Port Wine trade and to the Douro farming, for the benefit of the wine of the Douro Region.

At that time, his business instinct and strategic vision came to the fore: financially fulfilled and recognized both nationally and internationally, Messias Baptista could, as many did, limit himself to hoarding material results, but such an orientation did not harmonize with the his temperament – ??on the contrary, his objective was already to carry out the work that had occupied his thoughts for some time: to achieve a wine producing organization that would contribute to the aggrandizement of his Land and to the prestige of Portuguese wines in world markets.

Officially registered as an exporter since 1934, long before that he already owned large warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, where he kept a deposit of never less than 2,000 barrels of old wines. Such a stock was motivated by the need to guarantee the same types of wine, and therefore, every year, at selected Quintas within the Douro Demarcated Region, Messias Baptista made enough wines to maintain that stock, an irrefutable guarantee of a house that has always had as a rule to defend the good credit of the firm and its products, not only in Portugal, but also abroad.

It is in these warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia that, even today, the Messias Port Wine is bottled, in an area of ??approximately 10,000 square meters. A branch and export follow-up sector are also located here. On January 2, 1953 the company was transformed into a public limited company, changing its name to Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial dos Vinhos Messias, S.A.

Later, between 1956 and 1958, Messias acquired, in the Douro Region, the Quinta do Cachão (Estate of Cachão) and Quinta do Rei (Estate of Rei), an area of approximately 200 hectares where facilities covering more than 5,000 square meters are still located today for the manufacture, storage and aging of wines from the Region. Messias Baptista managed the company until 1973, having died the following year.

The administration of MESSIAS is, even today, ensured by the descendants of the 3rd and 4th generations of the family. Messias continues to produce and sell wines from the main demarcated regions: Bairrada, Douro, Dão, Vinho Verde and Port Wine. The company is also recognized for the high quality of its sparkling wines, faithfully produced using the traditional method, and brandies.

Messias is one of the few groups that has a complete range of wine products from the best Portuguese regions and from its own Estates. The most demanding foreign markets recognize the quality of the company’s products, as around 65% of its production is exported to the five continents.
